Introduction

To develop an all-inclusive TouristCard that combines public transport access with access to leisure and tourist attractions across the region of Northwest Germany. An area that spans from germany's north Sea coast (including the islands of Helgoland and Borkum) to the Teutoburg forest and from the Emsland to Stade. The role of soft, environmental tourism will be enhanced using this 'north-West Entdecker Card'. The technology is based on an intelligent smart card, which will become the standard for public transport ticketing applications. Target 2is supporting the initiation phase of the TouristCard to raise public interest with awareness campaigns, marketing research and will look for further development options.

2004 proved a great success for the DiscoveryCard for Bremen (EntdeckerCard Nordwest); especially during the summer period with a high demand for this innovative offer.  More than 10000 customers used the DiscoveryCard in 2004 which showed an improvement from 2003 when figures illustrated 7000 customers using the card. As a result of the success of the DiscoveryCard the offer will be extended and will add a huge range of new attractions for the summer of 2005.

The survey informed us that 56% of all users were satisfied, 5% were not satisfied and 6% provided no answer.  One of the results, which will have a great importance on stakeholders, was if the DiscoveryCard makes the region more attractive. 72% answered with “Absolutely”, 23% with “yes” and only 5% were “not convinced”.

One of the results from the survey showed the Target team in Bremen the importance of the DiscoveryCard in relation to Mobility was the fact that 86% off all customers agreeing that the free public transport was very important, with only 2% believing it not to be and a further 9% still preferring to travel by car.
