Introduction
The Traffic and Public Transport Authority in Goteborg is using the pedagogical method 'Storyline' to inspire teachers to work with traffic issues in school.  The target groups are children and young people between the ages of 6 and 19.  So far over 200 students in three schools have increased their knowledge about traffic awareness and safety.  In addition, more schools in Goteborg have been inspired and have started their own work with Storyline and Traffic.

ACTIVITY UPDATES:-
'Learning to change the world' presentations.
May 2004.
Two presentations about bicycle accidents and transport alternatives using the work developed through 'Storyline' learning, was delivered to parents and the Traffic and Public Transport Authority.  Ann-Sofi Nilsson led the cycle presentation, which included the campaign videos, designs for cycle helmets, poems and survey results.   'Commuting Karl', (see image above), one of the 'storyline' character's was used to illustrate transport alternatives.

Participants in the environmental conference 'Learning to change the world' also visited the school.  Delegates from Brazil, India, Macedonia and Zambia were able to see how traffic-related environmental activities can be taught.

Over 200 students in Goteborg are working with Storyline and traffic.
Storyline involves the students right from the start.  The method is based on teacher and pupils together creating a story in the classroom.  The story comes to life when the pupils shape the environment and populate it with characters.  Ylva Lundin, a Storyline teacher, has designed three topic outlines regarding traffic issues.

The Storylines will be trailed and evaluated with teachers in the Lundby area.  The results will be published here in this section.

StorylineYoung pupils 7-10 years, are building models of the area around their own school.  The model is the starting point of the discussion about the environment the children pass everyday.  To improve the area for everyone, the students create characters placing them in real-life scenarios and discuss various situations. The students suggestions are fed back to the Transport Authority.

Pupils 10-12 years, are engaged in the problems with traffic pollution.  They are trying to find solutions to change the sole commuter Karl's behaviour (see header  image).  A summary report about Commuter Karl and storyline can be viewed in the related links section.

Pupils 14-15 years, get to meet Lisa and Johan, two life-size dolls.  They appear to the students in the classroom as if they are in hospital.  Lisa and Johan have had a bad moped accident.  Working through art, poetry and drama the students get to know the story of Lisa and Johan.  This is the start for working attitudes and the risks involved when driving.  The students then create different characters that could influence young peoples behaviour.

The projects have been published in Swedish and can be viewed on from the related Storyline materials link.  Each of these contains topic outlines, instructions, copy material and even sound files.
